When it comes to eyelash extensions, achieving a strong and long-lasting bond between the extensions and the natural lashes is crucial for great retention and client satisfaction. This is where bonders come into play. Bonders are specialised products used at the end of the lash extension process to enhance the adhesive bond and ensure the extensions stay in place. In this blog, we will explore how bonders work and their role in creating beautiful and durable lash extensions.
Understanding Bonders
Bonders (which can also be known as lash sealants or adhesive accelerators) are products designed to improve the adhesive bond between the lash extensions and the natural lashes. They are usually applied after the extensions have been attached to ensure a secure and lasting hold. Bonders come in different forms, including liquid, gel, or mist, and are usually applied using a disposable brush. Pinkfishes’ bonder is called Pink Elixir and comes in liquid form – you can purchase in either 10ml or 1ml bottles.
How Bonders Work
Adhesive Activation
Bonders contain ingredients that help to activate and accelerate the curing process of the adhesive used in lash extensions. The adhesive used in lash extensions is typically a cyanoacrylate-based glue that polymerizes when exposed to moisture. Bonders facilitate this process, allowing the adhesive to dry and bond more quickly. Therefore, you can often get lashes wet a lot quicker when using a bonder, than if you were not using one – generally within 6 hours of application.
Improved Adhesive Bond
Bonders create an optimal surface for the adhesive to bond with the natural lashes. They remove any tiny air bubbles that interfere with the bonding process. This results in a stronger and more durable bond between the extensions and the natural lashes, reducing the chances of premature shedding or loosening of the extensions.
Enhanced Retention
By improving the adhesive bond, bonders contribute to better retention of lash extensions. The extensions are less likely to fall off or become loose, allowing clients to enjoy their lash extensions for a longer period before needing a fill or touch-up. Meaning happier clients all round!
Reduced Level of Fumes
Bonders help to neutralise adhesive fumes that are created throughout the application process, which help to provide a more comfortable treatment and reduce any unnecessary sensitivities that your client may experience.
Considerations for Using Bonders
While bonders offer several benefits, it is important to consider the following factors:
Adhesive Compatibility
Not all bonders are compatible with every adhesive. It is essential to use a bonder that is recommended by the adhesive manufacturer or specifically formulated to work with the adhesive being used. Using incompatible bonders may result in poor bonding or even damage to the extensions or natural lashes. All Pinkfishes glues are compatible with our Pink Elixir bonder.
Application Technique
Proper application of bonders is crucial for their effectiveness. Lash artists should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and guidelines for application. Over-application or improper technique may lead to excessive drying or clumping of the adhesive, affecting the overall result. Here at Pinkfishes, we recommend applying our Pink Elixir by using a microfibre brush to place a small amount of product along the lash line (where the glue is). However, if the extensions have not been applied correctly, then no product will stop them from falling off prematurely. If the glue isn’t right for the client or lash tech’s working speed, then this will also affect retention before the bonder is even used.
Client Sensitivity
Some clients may have sensitivities or allergies to the ingredients present in bonders. It is important to perform a patch test before using a bonder on a client for the first time. This helps to identify any potential adverse reactions and ensures the client’s safety.

So, in summary, bonders play a vital role in the eyelash extension process by improving the adhesive bond and enhancing the longevity of the extensions. They work by activating the adhesive and creating an optimal bonding surface. However, it is important to use compatible bonders, follow proper application techniques, and consider client sensitivities. By incorporating bonders into the lash extension process, lash artists can ensure that their clients enjoy beautiful, long-lasting, and secure lash extensions.
